Challenge Yourself

The human mind loves to be pushed to its limits. It love to work extremely hard to resolve an issue. The human mind thrives under pressure. It anticipates that which we never even knew would or had occurred. The human brain is an incredible work of art and providing it with simple challenges will keep it fresh and alive.

Pushing yourself outside of your boundary sometimes is great.  To take yourself out of your comfort level and to challenge yourself is great in helping to build character and strength.  There are various ways in which you can challenge yourself. Here are a few examples:
  • Sign up for a race/marathon.
  • Join a club sport
  • Join a competition. (I.E. a Pageant like me!)
  • Backpack a foreign country (or 22 like I did! J)
  • Paint your own masterpiece.
  • Take a dance class.  It’s fun, a stress reliever and a great work out!
  • Audition for something that you love like singing or acting
  • Apply for your dream job!
  • Set a goal for how many books you can read in a week
  • Learn a new language.  There are over 6,000 languages spoken around the world.  Learning a foreign language can be challenging but it has many benefits. It exercises your brain, it expands your marketability for jobs, it fosters cultural understanding and it encourages you to explore the world.
  • Start a Blog!
  • Break a routine.
  • Do something that scares you.  I’m terrified of heights but I contantly do things that require heights just to prove to myself that I can do it.  Such as roller coasters, plane rides, parasailing, etc. and one day sky diving!
  • Write a novel or create a poetry book.  If you love music, write a song!
  • Learn to play an instrument.
  • Get creative.  Go to a craft store and buy materials to: paint a picture, make a scrap book, sew/make a blanket, make a card, create jewelry, decorate a picture frame, etc.
  • Join a gym or YMCA and create a health plan.
  • Take a yoga, bikram, spin, kick boxing or pilates class.
  • Enroll in a cooking class and then make what you learned for your friends and family.
  • Wake up early to get your day started.
  • Create a weekly exercise routine.
  • Create a life handbook.  Write down what you want out of life and what you need to do to achieve those goals.  Don’t be afraid to go outside of your box.  Dream, Do, Live. Be sure to include your past and current accomplishments as well.
  • Start a 30-day challenge.  Set a goal and give yourself 30 days to achieve it.
  • Try to mediate. Clear your mind, refocus yourself and calm your body.
  • Read at least one self-improvement article a day or book a week.

Make A Difference by Giving Back

  • Giving back is so important. There are endless amounts of ways to give back. You don’t have to be directly affected or know somebody who is directly affected in order to donate your time with a not-profit.  Volunteer with organizations that you are passionate about whether it may be helping to fight hunger, helping fight child or domestic abuse, helping women or men in need, helping animals find loving homes, helping the homeless, helping to fight a disease, etc.
  • It’s important to find volunteer opportunities that allow you to utilize and maximize your strengths and interests.  For instance, if you love sports then you can teach child with disabilities how to play your favorite sport, if you love to teach then you can help someone learn to read or to speak English, if you love to cook then you can help at a soup kitchen or to prepare food for an event, if you love to decorate then you can help set up a charity event, if you love to organize and plan then you can be on the development side of an event, if you love working with money then you can help with the financial side of an organization and/or help to raise money, if you love to exercise then you should sign up for a race, etc.
  • How to Find Opportunities:
    • Email the volunteer coordinator on any organization’s website and ask how you can help.  Organizations are always in need of some extra help.
  • Volunteering ideas: exercise your passion for event planning and help set up at a charity function, put your social skills to work and help out with advertising and cold calling, take dogs who are at shelters or the humane society for daily walks,  think of fun and creative ways to raise money for an organization,
  • Volunteering is great for many reasons.  It allows you to meet people, learn more about your community, it builds social skills, it can lead to exciting new opportunities, it allows you to learn what you are most passionate about in life, it builds great character and self-esteem, it’s great for your resume, etc. I volunteered for a few events with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Illinois Chapter which led to me being asked to be an intern with the organization and work downtown in a fabulous high-rise.  I helped out wherever I was needed but eventually I became the assistant event coordinator for the 2010 MS Walk. It was an amazing experience and I learned a lot.

Ease Your Stress

  • Stress causes your body to hold onto unwanted toxins which then get stored in your muscles.  Stress can also cause you to tighten your muscles, sometimes without even realizing it, which can cause tension headaches. To loosen up tight neck and back muscles: fill your tub with warm water, pour around 2 handfuls of Epsom salt into the water and ease your way in.  The Epsom salt will naturally extract any toxins that are being stored in your muscles causing aches and discomfort.  Epsom salt can be found in local drugstores and grocery stores in the health and nutrition isles.  I bought Epsom salt that is infused with Eucalyptus oils from the dollar store.
  • Eucalyptus is a natural destresser.  Use products that contain eucalyptus oils like bath salts, candles, lotions, soaps or shampoos to help clear your mind.
  • Sit Still and Breathe. Relax and refocus your mind and body with your eyes closed and in silence for 10 minutes a day. It may be challenging but it do you good.
  • Meditate.  It will help you calm and clear your mind.  Meditating before bed will also call for less sleep because the clearing of your mind's clutter will make you feel refreshed.
  • De-Stress with Lemon-oil. Make your own lemon essential oil by using lemon peel. Grate the outside of the lemon over a bowl and then fill a small glass spray bottle halfway with the grated lemon zest. Fill the rest of the bottle with olive oil.  You now have your own distressing spritzer!  Set the bottle on a windowsill or somewhere where there is a lot of sun.  Leave it there for a few days, but shake the bottle a few times per day.  Be sure to keep your homemade lemon oil in an airtight container at room temperature.

    Financial Tips

    ·         Save your Money! Saving your money isn’t always that easy. The world is full of tempting things that scream your name.  But, more now than ever, it is crucial to save.  I have a variety of tips to help you save your money and to get your finances under control.
o   Put your money into your bank account as soon as you can.
o   When putting your money into your bank account, put the majority of it into your savings account and always leave a certain amount in your checking.  This is for a few reasons.
§  This will give you control over your checking account when it comes to spending.  You will be more aware of a budget or limit when spending rather than knowing that you have an “unlimited” amount when using your debit card or writing a check.
§  For safety reasons: in case you lose your debit card and someone finds it and decides to use it, all of your money will not be available for the fraud to spend (just what will be in your checking account).
§  Make sure you have a saving account that has a good interest program.  I have been with Bank of America for a few years now and I love it.  They have a Money Market Savings program that allows me to gain a small amount of interest every month.  Also, they have a nice Keep the Change program that rounds up to the nearest dollar whenever I use my debit card.  That amount is then transferred from my checking to my savings account.

o   Pay in cash whenever you can.  This will allow you to a better idea of exactly how much you are spending.  When using debit or credit cards, it’s easy for costs to add up before you realize just how much you have actually spent.
o   I am not a fan of credit cards, at all. I feel that they are a big reason why people are in the unfortunate financial state that they are in these days.  But, truth is, credit cards are not always bad.  It is important to build your credit so that you can qualify for loans for buying a house, car, etc, in the future.  Be sure to pay off your credit cards in a reasonable timeframe so that you do not end up accumulating too much interest.
o   It’s no secret that it can be extremely difficult to find a job in this economy but, that is no excuse to soak in your sorrows about not having money.  There are always options; you just have to put in the work.
§  Search job websites like Craigslist, IndeedJobs.com, CareerBuilder, etc.
§  Look into Temp agencies.  They will help you find jobs that are best for you.
§  Clean out your closet and sell it to local Buy,Sell,Trade stores like Platos Closet, CrossRoads and Bufflo Exchange (search for what stores are in your area).
§  Sign up for focus groups online.  These are companies that will contact you to do surveys or testing sessions for different types of product or services.  It’s fun, easy and they pay a nice amount.
§  Ask your friends and family members if their job is hiring or if they know of any place. It never hurts to ask.
§  Just go in and apply! Not every place posts ads for hiring online. It’s possible that one of their employees left and there is an open position. Go into a place to apply or give them a call.  You’ll never know unless you try!
§  Search for seasonal work.  Plenty of companies look to hire additional people for seasonal hours (meaning anything from sports seasons to holiday seasons).  If you do a good enough job, maybe they’ll make your position permanent!

Tips on How to Save Money!

    o   I Love Couponing!
§  Millions of dollars get thrown into the garbage everyday with coupon ads.  Instead of ignorning those ads in your local newspaper, take a look at them and maybe you’ll find a coupon for something that you actually buy.  It will save you money!
§  The more coupons you use, the more money you’ll save!
§  Use your savings card for the grocery store.  It’s the easiest way to save moey.
§  Check the weekly savings ad for your grocery store to see what is on sale and then check the coupon ads, you may get a double savings!
§  You can use coupons are stores like CVS and Walgreens too.
§  Walgreens always has their own coupon book near the weekly saving paper which hold good coupons.
§  Some grocery stores like Jewel Osco have their own coupon books near the customer service desk.

    Detox the Body

    Why Detox?

    www.rawforbeauty.com

Detoxing is a way to cleanse the body of chemicals, pollutants and toxins that have made their way into your body.  By emphasizing high-nutrient foods, your body excretes and eliminates any unwanted accumulated toxins that are stored in fat cells and organs.  Detoxing assists your detoxification organs such as skin and liver in the detox process.  There are numerous foods, herbs and remedies to detox the body.  Here are just a few: (click on the underlined terms to view articles full of great information)

    •  Parsley and coriander

These bind heavy metals like mercury so they can be extracted from your body. They are also alkalizing and full of chlorophyll. Add to salads, stir fries, and green smoothies. They can be eaten cooked or raw.
    • Water

Many people are partially dehydrated all the time which stresses your system and prevents efficient detoxification. Drink lots of water; 2 to 3 liters per day.

Try drinking a liter (about 4 cups) of water in the morning, then sip the remaining 1-2 liters throughout the day. Avoid drinking at mealtimes, so you don't dilute your digestive juices.
    • Leafy greens

Leafy greens ( kale, celery, bok choy, silverbeet, baby spinach...) are the backbone for any good detox. They are alkalizing, and an alkaline body is better at battling bad bacteria, yeast and keeping cravings at bay.  Green leafy veggies also contain chlorella which helps to cleanse and increase the oxygen in your blood, improving your cellular health.

Try adding a daily green smoothy to up your green intake, as well as eating lots of big leafy salads with every meal (including breakfast!) and simple veggie stir fries.

    • Lemon water
Lemon is further alkalizing to your body (even though it tastes acidic when we drink it), and it helps improve digestion, supports liver detoxification and reduce bloating. The lemon juice activates your liver to release toxins and helps cleanse the intestines

Mix the juice of half a lemon into 200 milliliters of warm water and drink it first thing in the morning on     an empty stomach. If you can handle it, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar as well.

    • Avocado
Omega-3 helps to reduce inflammation and ease digestion. Eat avocado, flax seed oil, hemp oil and extra virgin olive oil.  These oils are unstable at high heats, so make sure you don't undo your detoxifying benefits by submitting them to high temperatures and turning them rancid. Keep hemp and flax seed oils in the fridge, and get them into your diet by pouring over salads.

    Additional detoxing tips:
    • The Sauna
    • Bikram or Hot Yoga
    • Simply Working Out
Boosting Your Immunity (Alternatives to the Flu Shot)

    Garlic

Garlic is a natural antibacterial agent. It’s a serious germ fighter that helps the body fight off any unwanted bacteria. The most potent, therapeutic way to consume garlic is raw.  Try adding raw garlic to salad dressings, hummus and dips.

    • Boost Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and super supporter of your immune system. It is known for decreasing the severity of colds, so even if you’ve already got the bug load up on vitamin C to help ease the pain. Great vitamin C sources in the wintertime include: dark leafy greens, rutabaga, broccoli, brussels sprouts, lemons, and persimmons.  Try having a green juice with kale, lemon and ginger on a daily basis.
    • Get Enough Sleep and Manage Your Stress

When you compromise on sleep and experience a lot of stress, you are also weakening your body’s immune system and ability to fight off colds and flus. Try to prioritize active rest, like some gentle restorative yoga, practice deep breathing, meditate, go for a walk – what ever it is that works for you. But do something and get your 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.

    • Ginger

Ginger is a great inflammation and pain reliever.  It’s also an anti-viral agent helping to boost your immune system. Ginger also has a nice and warning effect on the body in the colder winter months and helps resolve mucus build up. It also has plenty of digestive benefits.
    • Kick the Sugar

Let your sugar come from immunity-boosting fresh fruits and sweet root vegetables, not candybars, cookies and soda. Sugar weakens your immune system and causes inflammation in the body.

How to Reduce your Blood Pressure Naturally

Over 60 million Americans have high blood pressure, including more than half (54%) of all Americans age 65 to 74 years old and nearly three quarters (72%) of all American blacks in the same age group.  High blood pressure is a major risk factor for a heart attack or stroke. In fact, it is generally regarded as the most significant risk factor for a stroke.
Here are four ways to lower your blood pressure without medication:

    1. Drink Beet Juice.

Several recent studies have shown that drinking fresh beet juice can lead to clinically meaningful reductions in blood pressure.  Why it works: The decrease in blood pressure is due to the chemical formation of nitrite from the dietary nitrates in the juice. Once in the general circulation, nitrite can be converted to nitric oxide (NO) by the cells that line blood vessels. NO is a powerful dilator of blood vessels, resulting in lower blood pressure.

    2. Eat Fresh, Raw Garlic.

Garlic has a wide range of well-documented effects, including helping to lower blood pressure. Studies showing a positive effect of garlic and garlic preparations are those that deliver a sufficient dosage of allicin. To get enough allicin, eat 1 to 4 cloves of fresh garlic a day. If you want to avoid garlic breath in public, add minced fresh garlic to your salad dressing in the evening at dinner.
Why it works: All of the beneficial effects of garlic are attributed to its sulfur-containing compounds: allicin, diallyl disulfide, diallyl trisulfide, and others. Allicin is mainly responsible for the pungent odor of garlic. It is formed by the action of the enzyme alliinase on the compound alliin. The enzyme is activated by heat, oxygen, or water. This accounts for the fact that cooked garlic, odorless supplements, "aged garlic preparations," and garlic oil products produce neither as strong an odor as raw garlic nor nearly as powerful medicinal effects as raw fresh garlic.

    3. Drink Black Tea.

Why it works: It's believed that black tea's hypertension benefits may be due to the fact that the beverage improves the function of the endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels and affect blood pressure. Other research suggests that flavonoids in black tea can improve the tone of blood vessels, helping them channel blood more efficiently.

    4. Get More Magnesium.

Research shows many adults do not get the recommended dietary allowance of at least 320 mg of magnesium for women and 420 mg for men, and that for every 100 mg increase in magnesium intake, the risk of stroke is reduced by about 9 percent.
Why it works: Magnesium helps dilate blood vessels and prevents spasm in your heart muscle and blood vessel walls. It also dissolves blood clots. All of these aid optimal heart and blood vessel function and can help to lower blood pressure.

5 Foods for a Faster Brain

As the brain is 80% fat, foods that are rich in omega 3 fats and/or antioxidants continue to be the cornerstone of cognitive nutrition. However, as nutritional science has progressed, so too has our understanding of food and how it impacts the brain.

    1. Black Cod/Sable Fish

Black Cod/sable fish is one of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA makes up 60% of the fatty constituents of the brain which keeps the brain cell membranes soft and fluid. This improves communication within the brain cells and enhances learning and memory. 4oz of black cod contains 1800mg of omega 3 fats, one third more than wild salmon.

    2. Chia seed

Chia seed contains the highest vegetarian source of omega 3 fats, alpha linoleic acid (ALA). While chia seed does not contain DHA, its omega 3 fat will convert to DHA with the help of magnesium and Vitamin C. Three tablespoons of chia seed will create 1200mg of DHA and EPA, making its cognitive-nutrition capacity consistent with wild salmon and far exceeding farmed salmon.

How to Eat: Try chia seeds soaked in almond milk and topped with berries (rich in magnesium and Vitamin C), or soaked and blended with cashew nut milk and blueberries to create a vegan blueberry mousse. Enjoy a green smoothie made with frozen banana, chia seed, kale and almond milk. Or try Chia Goodness cereal with apple and almonds, available at Whole Foods and other healthfood stores.

    3. Broccoli sprouts

Broccoli sprouts contain the powerful phytonutrient, sulforaphane. Sulforaphane activates and amplifies the body's most abundant antioxidant, glutathione. This protects the brain from free radical damage and preserves the integrity of the synaptic membranes, which are central to learning and memory. Half a cup of broccoli sprouts have more sulforaphane than over a pound of broccoli.

    4. Turmeric

Turmeric is the yellow pigment in curry which contains the polyphenol, curcumin. Curcumin turns on a brain protective pathway, Nrf2, which upregulates detoxification, increases glutathione levels and reduces inflammation.

Inflammation has been linked to many neurodegenerative conditions and more mild cognitive conditions such as lowered mental acuity and slow information processing speed. Turmeric may even inhibit the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain. Interestingly, India has the lowest level of Alzheimer’s disease in the world.

    5. Raw Cacao Nibs

Cacao beans have more antioxidants flavonoids than blueberries, green tea and red wine. They are an excellent source of phytonutrients, which turn off damaging inflammation transcription factors such as NF-kB and turn on protective pathways such as Nrf2.

This helps to improve memory, increase information-processing speed and improve verbal fluency. Cacao beans have also been associated with improvements in mood as they enhance opioid-receptors in the brain. Stick to the raw cacao nibs versus chocolate. You lose many of the health benefits when you eat commercially produced chocolate (even 70%).

    Apple Cider Vinegar

I have read countless articles praising the numerous health benefits of apple cider vinegar (ACV).  Health nuts swear that it can cure anything from acid reflux to skin problems.  To obtain the most health benefits from ACV it’s important to use organic unfiltered/ minimal dilution brands such as Bragg’s.  Make sure that the ACV that you choose is cloudy.  That means that it contains “the mother”.  It is the cloudy settlement at the bottom of the bottle which contains the nutrients and makes the health benefits possible.  Here are other uses for apple cider vinegar:

     Turmeric Uses

When my mom’s sciatic began to act up, the worst that it had ever been, I began to worry about the doses of pain killer narcotics that the doctor was prescribing her.  I know just how dangerous pain killers can be, especially for someone in such an immense amount of pain.  So,  I took her to my favorite health store, Health Hut, determined to find her some sort of safe and healthier alternative. I found her an extra strength pain killer derived from the spice Turmeric.  In high concentrations of various levels, you can find Turmeric in pill form called Curcumin or Curamin at your local health store.  It takes a while for it to build up in your system and no, it won’t take the pain of severe sciatica away completely but, it does help tremendously and it is an excellent alternative to narcotics.  Turmeric is considered a super spice and has countless health benefits.  Besides for pill form, Turmeric spice can be used in cooking, added to warm milk to make Turmeric milk, or used in teas.  Be creative in your uses of Turmeric but give it a try, it will do wonders for your skin, body, mind and overall health J
